Flashmob by Christopher Farnsworth

Morrow, 368 pages, $26.99

John Smith. Now there’s a character name for you. Easy to remember and it immediately impresses upon you that here is a man with something to hide. And what he has to hide is that there is nothing you can hide from him. He can read minds.

Christopher Farnsworth has created an unusual protagonist, one he places here, in a world you would recognize. His story smacks of sci-fi, but it isn’t really. It’s about greed and human nature and the herd mentality. Very timely, rather.

At the core of Farnsworth’s story is a tale of a piece of computer code and the cyber world run amok. It's perilously close to our own media situation, with “fake news” and Russian interference. A virulent and vitriolic piece of code was written with the purpose of influencing people on social media. As a result, hate mobs are being instantly created. It is apparently a small step from writing hate to actually physically attacking a target.

A young woman from a tawdry reality show was the first big target. Behind the scenes the people from the show got along, although the scripted show portrayed her as the villain. The dark website Downvote created a mental frenzy among its subscribers, which resulted in the woman eventually being shot.

I saw on my own Facebook feed just yesterday a picture of a woman and the words plastered over the picture, “Get this woman,” because she had allegedly stolen something. There was no link to a regular news story or police website or anything to verify that the picture and what it represented were true. There were a lot of yeah-get-her comments and shares. After having just finished this book, I thought that post was scary and the book scarily prophetic.

John Smith was Special Forces, his special power used by our government to affect military conflicts. After tiring of that, Smith became a security consultant, a high-priced bodyguard. As a result of a prior case, he just happens to be attending the young woman’s wedding when the assailants attack the event. Smith disables the shooters, who proved to be ordinary schmucks with a lot of anger issues, driven by Downvote to become a deadly flashmob.

As a result of Smith’s unplanned involvement, he becomes acquainted with an FBI agent, a tech billionaire with federal legal problems, and the billionaire’s bodyguard. The FBI agent mostly puts impediments in Smith’s path. The tech guy, Aaric Stark, hires him to assuage the guilt he feels for having had an inadvertent role in getting the code developed. The bodyguard, a young woman named Sara Fitch, tags along with Smith to make sure her boss’ money is well spent.

There are a lot of bangs and booms, bombs and skullduggery, but not a lot of head-scratching computer blah-blah-blah, fortunately. It’s a pretty straight-ahead story about being a good guy trying to catch a bad guy. 

One of the things I liked about this book — which I liked very much — was something that I first encountered with Ursula LeGuin’s Earthsea series: the thought that morally there was a payment for every special power used. Every pain Smith visited on his opponents was given back to him psychically at some later point. It was the price he paid for his “gift.” That’s such an intriguing proposition in a fictional world where the author very well could have rigged it so his hero suffered no ill effects. Super man versus human man, and Farnsworth chose human man.

This book is very readable, relatable, and scary, especially in an age when a fake news story can lead an armed man to storm a pizza place to rescue the non-existent victims of a pedophile ring masterminded by a presidential candidate. For real.

A Separation by Katie Kitamura

Riverhead Books, 240 pages, $25

When is a mystery about murder not a murder mystery? Katie Kitamura gives us a literary example of two divergent thoughts existing on the same plane.

An unnamed woman, who is living with her boyfriend in London, is asked by her husband’s mother to find him in Greece. He has been incommunicado for a few days. The catch: the woman’s husband, Christopher, has asked her to pretend that they are still living together. Awkward.

Well, the woman had been meaning to ask her husband for a divorce anyway, so she hops on a plane and arrives at the posh hotel in Mani, an obscure village five hours from Athens, where her husband is registered. But her husband is not there.

As the book continues, Christopher is spotted here and rumored there. Christopher’s weakness is for the transient affair. There must be a trail of jealous husbands, boyfriends, and broken hearts following him. It seems that one of the hotel’s receptionists is one of those broken hearts. She metaphorically bleeds all over the hotel in brooding fashion.

Kitamura’s book reads like a foreign film. Our hapless narrator does not speak Greek. She is, oddly, a translator-class French speaker, but in Greece, she is vulnerable. She is at the mercy of the concierge and taxi driver who shepherd her in her search for her errant husband. Do they have ulterior motives? There are implications, silent accusations, whirling thoughts of a conspiracy. She is a stranger in a strange land and does not know whom to trust.

Christopher, as if presaging the need, has ostensibly been doing research on mourning. He has been drawn to women paid to mourn (musically, majestically, dramatically) at funerals. The little town of Mani is the epicenter of the trade.

The unnamed woman begins her search by looking at a research route Christopher might have taken. It leads to one of the premier mourners, a woman who captures her own sadness in order to mourn for strangers. In a moving passage, the woman displays her ability to the unnamed woman. Grief builds to a crescendo and all the sadness of the world seems to gather in the little room in which they sit.

It’s almost an afterthought when a dead body, murdered by unknown hand, finally shows up. What is the protocol in a strange land? What is the language of death? Once a person is dead, does it matter who did it? Dead is dead. “The past is a foreign country; they do things differently there,” said L. P. Hartley. Greece is cradle to western civilization’s past and mythos seeps out of its caves and rocks. Perhaps death is grander there then or, alternatively, even less meaningful in the face of a grand mythical world. Maybe the individual death is not so meaningful, but the process of dealing with death brings a halt to the step of the living.

Here’s a drop of a spoiler. Although the unnamed woman — who had her own life and aspirations before her trip — arrived in Greece seeking separation, what she finds is the opposite: a life-long tie. 

Murder mystery, crime novel? Perhaps "The Separation" is a dream of one.

The Reckoning on Cane Hill by Steve Mosby

Pegasus Books, 352 pages, $25.95 (c2016, 

British author Steve Mosby has been scribbling away for ten books or so, but “The Reckoning on Cane Hill” is the first I have heard of him. Apologies to Mr. Mosby, who has won awards and recognition, on being slow on the uptake.

A woman, Charlie Matheson, died in a traffic accident two years before she suddenly appeared alive in a field and later collapsed in front of a store. That kind of gets you, doesn't it? You want to read more, don’t you?

Detective Mark Nelson, on a police force in an unnamed town in an unnamed country — although we presume it’s somewhere in Great Britain — is handed the case of finding out who “Charlie Matheson” really is. After two years, Charlie’s husband has moved on and now has a pregnant wife. It could be complicated to reintegrate her, if this mystery woman really is Charlie, but she apparently doesn’t care that the former husband has moved on. She has come back from Hell with a message. If she delivers the message, she can then live in Heaven as her reward.

In a separate narrative, Detective David Groves has been dealing with his own loss. A few years earlier, his two-year-old son, Jamie, was kidnapped from his home. The kidnapper was never caught. Now bones have been uncovered, along with artifacts that indicate the body is that of David’s son. David’s grief seems neverending, but he chooses to keep it at bay by working hard. His marriage has fallen apart, his wife having chosen another, more destructive path to assuage her grief. Then David receives a message on his son’s birthday, “I know who did it.”

Also thrown into the mix is a character from one of Mosby’s prior books, “The 50/50 Killer.” John Mercer destroyed his well-being and his work as a detective hunting a serial killer who forced couples to choose which one of them would die. Mark Nelson’s first day on assignment was John’s last. In theory, after leaving the force, John has been working on a book about the killer, whose identity and background were never uncovered. John appears to be a mentally broken man.

As these three storylines work toward each other, Mosby shows that the trail of broken lives, disappointments, and deaths might reveal a horror on a much larger scale. Indeed, this is a horror story more than a crime story. Mosby propels his story by making his readers wonder whether Charlie really has returned from Hell. If so, what kind of a God or Devil does she represent?

The ending was a little strange and I’m not sure if I liked it, but Mosby is an expert wrangler of suspense and certainly knows how to grab a reader’s attention. I certainly was propelled for almost the entire book to find out how Mosby was going to tie up his threads.

The Girl Before by J. P. Delaney

Ballantine Books, 352 pages, $27

“The Girl Before” is strikingly like two recent “girl” books, the megahits “Girl Gone” and “The Girl on the Train.” There are two main voices in “The Girl Before,” and it’s possible that both are unreliable narrators. A lot of the suspense comes from gradually learning the women’s true stories. And there are twists.

Emma Matthews and Jane Cavendish alternate their tales. Emma’s comes “before” and Jane’s is “now.” Despite a dizzying amount of toggling between the two, J. P. Delaney does a great job of keeping the reader on task with whichever story is to the fore. Their stories are similar and are based around the house they live in.

Edward Monkford is a well-known architect. He has a minimalist aesthetic, usually expressed in big projects. However, there is one small home he designed in London. It is this home that Emma and Jane, in turn, rent for an outrageously small amount of money. Why is it so reasonably priced? After all, it is a architectural gem, sometimes toured by formal groups. Is it because of the two hundred or so restrictions placed on the renters?

This is the part of the book I found most original and intriguing. Monkford’s house is a technological marvel, designed to adjust to the time of day, time of year, mood of the occupant, most of which is done automatically. Using sensors, the renter’s biometric feedback is used to further the house’s ability to “help” its occupant. The home is primarily cream and white, with clean surfaces and no unnecessary equipment, handles, artifacts, tchotchkes protruding or intruding. The restrictions are set to maintain this aesthetic. If your home isn’t cluttered, maybe your mind will follow suit. Decisions will be easier to make, priorities will be easier to find. This sounds more sci-fi than contemporary mystery, but it adds to the scare factor.

There are suspicious deaths, one having taken place in the house. Were these deaths murders? As the contemporary occupant, Jane must assume the burden to link the prior deaths. Is her own life in danger as a result? J. P. Delaney is the master of slowly teasing out the suspense.

“The Girl Before” was very entertaining and well-paced. It's "Gone Girl" plus "Fifty Shades of Grey" plus "The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up." J. P. Delaney knows her stuff.

The Essex Serpent by Sarah Perry

Custom House, 432 pages, $26.99

It’s so tempting to call “The Essex Serpent” a mystery. But it’s not.

There are initial intimations that this story could be a “Turn of the Screw” psychological thriller. In a particularly effective scene, young girls in a classroom begin to exhibit alarming hysterical behavior. But it isn’t.

For the most part, the setting is on the Blackwater Estuary in Essex, a fog-filled Gothic atmosphere par excellence. Mud sucks, sprays, coats, and hides the secrets of the little town of Aldwinter. The book is set in 1892, still prime Gothic literary territory. Reminiscent of Thomas Hardy’s lush descriptions of intertwined nature and human nature, Sarah Perry details the sights and sounds of Aldwinter, the countryside, the estuary, and its residents. Perry even sets foot in the poor person’s London.

I was disappointed, but not by Perry’s writing. It was excellently faux Gothic, stirring, and a tale well told. But there was no true tragedy, no true devastating secret, no ghosts. No crime.

The Essex serpent haunts the bayside but it is the people who haunt each other.

Artemis by Andy Weir

Crown, 320 pages, $27.00

Luckily for his audience, Andy Weir is a meticulous geek. Part of what makes his book such an above-average page-turner is his ability to balance a thrilling caper with science facts and science-based guesses. What kept people reading “The Martian” is still evident in “Artemis.” Weir is pretty good at pairing “what if” scenarios with tenacious protagonists and tense situations.

To call Andy Weir’s works “science-fiction” understates what he does in his books. “Science-fact-based-fiction” would be more accurate. In “Artemis,” Weir creates a settlement on the moon called Artemis, after the Greek goddess of the moon. He throws in myriad details to lend plausibility to the establishment of such a base. People live there on a permanent basis — the main character, Jazz Bashara, does not remember another home — but one of their main economies is tourism.

Jazz is a genius. It doesn’t take her long to learn something. She is a trouble-maker, a rule-breaker, an illegal risk-taker. She’s also lazy. That has something to do with the fact that all her life people have been telling her not to waste her talents, but defiantly, she has decided to waste them, except in non-traditional, criminal ways.

For someone who has a quick mind for the scam, she is financially poor, so poor she sleeps in a “coffin,” a bunk. She dreams of a shower (with grey water recycling, of course) of her own, a private room in which she can stand up, and food other than “gunk,” the nutritious but tasteless algae-based food. In her own precise way she has decided that 416,922 slugs (Artemis’ currency) is what she needs to attain a better standard of living. She knows her porter job merely provides the bare essentials. Her smuggling operation brings in a little more, but she is still far, far, far short of her goal. Then one of her clients for whom she regularly obtains contraband offers her one million slugs to do a job for him. After an oh-so-brief hesitation about the illegality of the proposal, she says yes.

What Jazz has to do is disable the harvesters, machines the moon’s aluminum smelter uses to grab ore. That is so Artemis’ resident billionaire can take over the aluminum company for an unknown purpose. All Jazz has to do is use her EVA suit illegally, go out onto the moon’s surface, and rig the harvesters to blow up. Easy-peasy.

What’s the fun in a caper that operates flawlessly? What could a criminal with a warped but stern moral code learn from this project? Remarkably, when her project goes south, she is neither deported nor jailed. But what does happen is Jazz subsequently determines the nefarious backstory of how Artemis really operates. The lead-up to the extraordinary headline-making caper that follows is delicious.

Thank you, Andy Weir, for creating a plausible and exciting future. Also, thank you for bringing a thoughtfulness to what must bind people together.

The Clockwork Dynasty by Daniel H. Wilson

Doubleday, 320 pages, $26.95

I remember when Daniel H. Wilson’s book, “Robopocalypse,” came out. It was a snap-crackle-pop of a book from the very first page. I thought it was more explosive than bubblegum and sparklier than champagne. It was a robot adventure with “A Wrinkle in Time” moral core. I hunted down Daniel H. Wilson to interview him. It helped that we both live in Portland, Oregon. I concluded he was 1) a smart person and 2) had more adventures in him, and 3) a human sensibility would always be at the center of his work.

So here we are with “The Clockwork Dynasty” many years later. I enjoyed the hell out of it.

There are these robots, see, only they aren’t called robots, they’re called “avtomats.” They are having a violent internal disagreement. A human, June, gets caught up in it. Coincidentally (ahem), she has a piece of machinery important to them and she knows about clockworks and machines and repairing automatons.

Eventually, Wilson’s story spans 5,000 years, but the core events take place in two storylines. Avtomat Peter awakens in Russia, along with avtomat Elena, whom he calls his “sister.” He’s big, bigger than an average adult human male, and she is small, like a human child. With no memory of what has come before he and Elena were dug out of a muddy hillside, Peter lives to serve the tsar, after whom he is named. Avtomats live longer than humans, so Peter’s story covers a period from the early 1700s to the present time.

June is doomed to live just a normal human life, should she be so lucky. She has spent her young life thus far, and a lot of grant money, tracking down automated dolls. Their clockwork apparatus intrigues her. This fascination was passed down from her grandfather, who also bequeathed her a strange “relic.” It’s crescent shape doesn’t indicate what its use might be. It’s composition doesn’t either. June hopes one day to crack that mystery as well. In the meantime, she plays with dolls.

When Peter met June. All hell was breaking loose.

Moral of the story: When you run from an avtomat, try to be faster than at least one person.

Obviously, this is my kind of book. Many things may be forgiven in pursuit of a good story, but I didn’t agree at all with Publishers Weekly’s particularly harsh review that there were so many offputting things. I thought “The Clockwork Dynasty” was fun, with interesting characters, great historical touches, and movie-ready visuals.

MBTB's Best Books of 2017

These books received MBTB stars in 2017. (Some were written in 2016 but not reviewed until 2017. What can I say but what I say every year: Too many books, too little time.)

Picador, 352 pages, $16

For a book that moved very slowly, I was on the edge of my seat. For a spy novel, it wasn’t really about spycraft. For a book about one man and his long life in the shadowy world of predicting the ebb and flow of world politics, it was not very long.

Louise Doughty covers John Harper’s life from when he was first sent to Indonesia in 1965, a volatile time in that country’s history, to 1998, when Harper is in his 50s and has returned to Indonesia. He is paying penance on Bali for some indiscretion, which is slowly revealed. Doughty’s description of life in Bali is evocative. She depicts a very non-Western culture, as seen by a mostly Western man, and creates something that is both exotic and quotidian.

Harper Paperbacks, 304 pages, $15.99 (c2016)

What I like about “The Ex” by ex-Portlander Alafair Burke is the nitty gritty of working a criminal case has not been wrapped in last year’s “Mission Impossible” script. Good twists, good characters, and a good story have not been buried by an overblown cinematic plot.

Criminal defense attorney Olivia Randall has agreed to handle the defense of an old college boyfriend on charges of murdering three people. One of the people Jack Harris, now a well-regarded author, is accused of murdering is Malcolm Neeley, the man whose teenaged son went on a shooting rampage a few years earlier which killed thirteen people, including Jack’s wife. Olivia methodically picks through the evidence and innuendo. Then slowly, one revelation after another appears. And it is delicious.

Broadway Books, 304 pages, $15 (c2016)

“Dodgers” is about four young African-American boys traveling across the country to kill a judge who is scheduled to testify against their gang boss in Los Angeles. What research, life experience, or attentive ear qualified Beverly to write this book? I have no personal experience or knowledge of gangs in L.A. (other than being a loyal fan of “The Wire,” set in Baltimore) and wouldn’t know if Beverly’s portrayal of gang activity is accurate.

Perhaps authenticity is not the main goal anyway. It’s a bizarre coming-of-age kind of story, a what-can-go-wrong-will-go-wrong kind of story, a touching story of a boy without a sense of normal who must learn to inhabit the alien environment of the Midwest.

The poetry and power of Beverly’s book lies in the observations East, the main character, makes of the country he travels through and the people he meets. What is the toll on East’s psyche caused by his and others’ actions? He suffers traumatic blow-back from what he witnesses and what he himself has done. "Dodgers" is a heart-wrenching book about survival and belonging.

Seventh Street Books, 315 pages, $15.95 (c2016)

Is Adrian McKinty Ireland’s poet laureate? He should be, although he is a fiction writer and there probably is fierce competition in the land where words rule. Even though McKinty lives in Australia now, his Irish voice is strong and melodic. It’s also funny, ironic, resigned, feisty, and tantalizingly evocative of Belfast in the time of The Troubles. 

It starts when off-duty CID Detective Sean Duffy is called out to find the missing wallet of a member of the Finnish delegation in town for an important business meeting. It is 1987, so the economic value of new business cannot be overestimated. Soon it escalates to a locked room murder.

I enjoyed the slow uncovering and linking of clues. I loved how McKinty gave Sean a love of esoteric classical music and single malt Scotches. I love how Sean used words in fun, to spite, to cajole, to spar. Sean Duffy is a great character.

Black Cat/Grove Press, 496 pages, $15 (c2014, U.S. Ed. 2016)

“The Borrowed” is an extraordinary collection of novellas with common characters. The six stories are all set in Hong Kong and go backwards from 2013 to 1967. They cover modern Hong Kong, the handover of Hong Kong from Britain to China, and the unrest under British rule. Chan Ho-kei has given us an historical perspective along with some cracking good detective stories.

Chan cleverly presents the stories backwards in time so you can notice how the future of the characters is affected by occurrences in the past. I don’t know why the title of the book is “The Borrowed.” Does it refer to some of the characters borrowing experiences from the past to inform the present? The book is certainly about choices. Are they living on borrowed time, because they certainly could have been killed at certain points? 

G.P. Putnam’s Sons, 368 pages, $27

Gus Murphy works for a second-rate hotel. (He defends it against slander that it is a third-rate one.) He is the hotel’s chauffeur and also the hotel detective and nightclub bouncer, none of which to this point has produced too much excitement, if you don’t count the dead body that had more to do with Gus than the hotel in the first book in this series. In return he receives a small income and lives in one of the hotel’s rooms. Things are starting to look up in his personal life, so of course things must now go sideways in virtually all aspects of his life.

Two of Gus’ good friends — perhaps his only friends — simultaneously develop serious problems. Slava, a fellow hotel employee, is running from a past that may have caught up with him. Cold-eyed Russians and Chechens are involved. And guns. Gus’ other friend, Father Bill, knows someone who could use Gus’ detective skills. Micah is a cold-eyed man who wants to find out why his granddaughter was murdered. All those cold-eyed people could just about freeze a private eye into the grave.

Although I had reservations about Gus’ characterization, I am in awe of the overall quality of Coleman’s work.

Translated from Swedish by Rachel Willson-Broyles

What a riveting book this was! And the translation by Rachel Willson-Broyles was terrific. Willson-Broyles’ work conveys a sense of a different culture while reading smoothly as though it had been written originally in English. Malin Persson Giolito has written a book with a full quota of suspense, overlaid by the social commentary for which Swedish writers are known.

When the story begins, eighteen-year-old Maja Norberg is in jail awaiting her trial. She is accused of participating in a school shooting with her boyfriend Sebastian Fagerman. The story is told through Maja’s first-person narrative. Is she an unreliable narrator? Maja’s dream-like life in jail contrasts with her sharp recollection of how events and introductions coalesced into the teenaged angst that led to the murders. During the trial, she sits removed and quiet on the outside, while suffering from inner turmoil. 

“Quicksand” is about teenage anxiety, about parent-child relationships, about friendships, about expectations, about powerlessness and love and abuse. Giolito does her weaving so well that her story sticks around long after the last page has been turned. I started the book thinking that Maja would prove to be a conniving, spoiled brat who was startled to find herself caught. Giolito pulls out other possibilities, until Maja’s truth is revealed.

Minotaur Books, 320 pages, $25.99

It is always a pleasant surprise when an author’s storytelling prowess grows as she goes along. I liked “Rage Against the Dying,” Becky Masterman’s first Brigid Quinn book. The second book, “Fear the Darkness,” not so much. The third, “A Twist of the Knife,” is an energetic and throughtful return for ex-FBI agent Brigid Quinn.

Leaving the dry heat of her home near Tucson and the loving embrace of her husband, Carlo, Brigid returns to her humid home state of Florida, with a chance to solve a fifteen-year-old mystery and perhaps save a man waiting on Florida’s death row.

Becky Masterman has pulled one out of her writer’s hat, for sure. The story, which could have been just a straight-ahead thriller, stops on many occasions to ponder the morality of catching perpetrators at all costs. It stops to examine the lives of people traumatized by the past and asked to make choices that have no good endings. It makes us wonder about the inhumanity of caging people for years while awaiting their appointment with death.

The Dial Press, 400 pages, $27

Hannah Tinti is the much-lauded author of “The Good Thief.” In “The Twelve Lives of Samuel Hawley,” she once again creates a story larger than life, laced with quiet passion and heart.

Bullets usually go through me, says Samuel Hawley, as he collects an egg carton’s worth of them. That is not to say he isn’t harmed by the bullets, but he manages to bleed, then heal. We learn how he acquired the bullet holes through two stories: one following Loo, his twelve-year-old daughter, and one when Samuel met Lily, Loo’s mother.

Tinti follows the author’s prime directive: show, don’t tell. She doesn’t just say Hawley and Loo shoot firearms. She describes the guns, shotguns, and rifles, and how to shoot them. Hawley and Loo don’t just sail, Tinti describes every roll, pitch, and yaw. The stories are imbued with facts and touches — just enough, never too much — which amplify each part of the story she tells. “Twelve Lives” is a master class in creating the three dimensions and five senses of a fictional world.

Little, Brown and Company, 240 pages, $26

What do you do after you’ve written a bunch of much-praised, dark crime novels? You don’t go to Disneyland; you write a dark non-fiction crime book. And you write it with style. “The Long Drop” is only non-fiction in the sense that it is based on actual crimes in 1950s Glasgow and the actual trial of the accused perpetrator, Peter Manuel. At his trial, during which he fired his lawyers, Manuel talked for six hours on the witness stand, providing rich material for author Denise Mina.

Glasgow in the 1950s has never gleamed with such a dark and shiny luster as it does in Mina’s book. She flexes her Glaswegian muscle to present the characters behind one of Glasgow’s most infamous stories. Even when Mina sets a scene, she does so with choice and evocative words. For instance, “The grate is chrome, long and pinched, a prissy kiss of a grate.” She packs more in her 240 pages than most authors would in 420. 

Graywolf Press, 240 pages, $16

This is a wow! of a book. J. Robert Lennon has created a perfect rendition of a complicated story. His slew of characters have distinct voices. His three main storylines converge and leave nothing wanting.

A man and a woman are murdered in an isolated place near their home in upstate New York. Their young daughter escapes. The killers are never caught. Twelve years later, an artist, a writer, and their twelve-year-old daughter move into the renovated house that once belonged to the doomed family. Stuff gets stirred up (mainly by the twelve-year-old) and suddenly there is a threat in the air once again. But not all of the menace is physical.

Lennon moves from character to character, sometimes lingering longer on one. He gives each one a separate tone through style and language. He can move from the angst/ennui of a twelve-year-old to the lunkish thoughts of a hard-boiled criminal to the anxiety of a sophisticated middle-aged woman to the neediness of a self-involved middle-aged man.

At one point I was racing through the book so fast, I lost track of the story’s timeline. I had to go back and reread a couple of pages. I resented that. I didn’t want to waste an extra minute getting to the end. That’s the kind of book “The Marsh King’s Daughter” is.

Helena Pelletier was twelve years old when she and her mother escaped her father’s home in the marshy area of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. Although it was a traumatic time, she learned a lot about survival from her father. Now she has a family of her own, and her father has escaped from jail and is coming for her.

The intensity level is high. Descriptions of survival in the U.P. seem authentic. (But what do I know? I have electricity, a lot of salt, and neighborhood stores.)

If I ever stop raving about this book, it will be because I’m dead. Anthony Horowitz has mastered the art of writing a mystery so much so that he can even be full-blown meta about it. Yes, this is a mystery within a mystery. And each one is superb.

An editor at a publishing company in present-day London has as her main client a dislikable, but immensely popular, mystery writer. The publishing company has received his latest manuscript, but it is missing the crucial whodunnit pages at the end. Horowitz actually presents this manuscript, set in 1955, in a small village in the English countryside. He writes in the mystery writer’s voice. The present-day editor must find the missing pages. It should simply be a matter of asking the author for those pages, except the author has died by falling off the tower of his eccentric home in the English countryside.

Horowitz makes every character appear suspicious. There are clues. There are red herrings. Hats are offed to myriad other mystery novelists, especially Dame Agatha. It is clear that Horowitz is a fan and a scholar of the genre.

All of Sue Grafton’s Kinsey Millhone books are blasts from the past, since Grafton has steadfastly refused to budge from the 80s (until the end of “Y Is for Yesterday”). This book is even more blastworthy as the story also wanders back to events in 1979. However, compared to the warmth and humor of Kinsey’s first-person telling, the 1979 third-person narrative seems colorless, narrative for narrative’s sake. Nevertheless, it’s Sue Grafton, folks! Y Is for Yay!

The main story of “Y” concerns the release from prison of Fritz who, as a teenager, shot Sloan, a fellow student at an expensive private school. Upon Fritz’ release, an extortionist demands $25,000 from Fritz’ parents or a videotape will be sent to the police. What is on the tape and what could be worse than what Fritz has already endured? Cue Kinsey Millhone’s appearance.

Viking, 272 pages, $28

It’s one thing to wrap up loose threads, it’s a genius thing to fifty-four years later create loose threads that need fixing. Is there any spy book more iconic than “The Spy Who Came in From the Cold”? John le Carré wrote that in 1963. George Smiley, spy master and grand marshal of the spy parade, made a quiet splash there.

What made le Carré’s books different was the moral gray ground through which the characters waded. There is no suave James Bond with a license to kill. There are instead intellectuals playing a chess game with real people as pieces.

In taking up the tale created in “The Spy Who Came in From the Cold,” le Carré has chosen Peter Guillam, a second banana in many of the Smiley books, to carry on. He is the center of attention. What does he know or even remember of the events in 1963? This tale slowly peels back the second banana’s recollections.

Ah, I do so love a faraway story told with humor, philosophy, ghosts, 1980s Laotian Communists, and rat catching.

What happens when series star, Dr. Siri Paiboun, is sent with his wife, his ex-morgue nurse, and his best friend to the 1980 Olympics to oversee the last-minute Laotian team. If your memory stretches back that far, remember the U.S. and many of its allies boycotted that Olympics over the Soviet Union’s invasion of Afghanistan. The holes created by the no-shows meant a bonanza for small Communist countries, like Laos.

Siri solves the murder — of course, there is a murder — in his own thoughtful, spirit-filled, non-Western way. And, as a bonus, we get to see a lot of eccentric Laotians frolic in the antiseptic venue created for a world-class event in Moscow.

“Himself” is a very unusual murder mystery. For one thing, there are tons of ghosts drifting about in the background of this story set in 1950 and 1976 in the Irish village of Mulderrig, County Mayo. The central murder happened in 1950, and in 1976, the son of the murder victim comes back to the town of his birth to find out what happened.

Mahoney — just Mahoney — purposefully drifts into Mulderrig on an unnaturally hot day in April. Nothing that happens after his arrival can be said to be natural. FYI, Mahony can see dead spirits. Besides that, his appearance has triggered some sort of seismic supernatural activity that builds to a cataclysmic crescendo.

“Himself” is bracingly charming, poetically musical, wittily Irish, decorously lusty, wonderfully drawn.

Viking, 304 pages, $28

Wait! What? I predict that is exactly what you will say upon finishing this book. Ingenious author or wicked tormentor? That Craig Johnson is some clever cowboy. This is Wyoming Sheriff Walt Longmire’s upmteenth millionth adventure. Thank goodness they have all been embellished by Johnson’s humor! This time around, Johnson tells two and a half tales, resulting in two-and-a-half times the fun.

Walt is a brand-new deputy to Sheriff Lucian Connelly of Absaroka County, Wyoming, in this tale told back in time. They are journeying on a train across the state with a bunch of other rootin’-tootin’ sheriffs. When a murder occurs, you would think there would be an immediate result, given the amount of detecting ability on board. But, no, it is up to Walt to save the day.

There is also a present-day story. All you need to know is that The Cheyenne Nation, The Greatest Legal Mind of Our Time, the undersheriff, the granddaughter, and the old man show up. They flit around as babysitters, house painters, and couch movers for most of the book, until they are required to haul out their firearms in a good cause.
