R.I.P. among the stars, Kate Wilhelm

We knew her at MBTB for her mystery stories, including the Barbara Holloway series. She lived in Eugene, a couple of hours south of Portland, and visited us way back when.

She was an engaging writer, with great imagination and verve.

Here is the New York Times obituary.

  1. It has been a sad time for mystery lovers. During the last twelve months four great series have come to an end. Two because their authors have died. Two because their authors decided it was the time to do so.

Sue Grafton died at 77 ending her p.i. Kinsey Millhone alphabet series. Her daughter wrote “ As far as we in the family are concerned, the alphabet ends at Y.” I concur, but I certainly had hoped we’d all get the chance to see how she’d wrap things up in Z.

Just today I found out that Kate Wilhelm died in Eugene earlier this month. She was 89. She wrote the Barbara Holloway, defense attorney series. I especially enjoyed them because they were all set in Eugene. Kate was also a science fiction writer who won the prestigious Hugo award.

May Sue and Barbara be resting peace. They gave joy to so many readers.

Two series were ended by their authors.

Margaret Coel ended her Wind River series with Arapaho Attorney Vicky Holden and Jesuit Priest Father John O’Malley

Margaret Maron ended her Judge Deborah Knott’s series

As I said in the beginning - a sad time ......
